Lawyer Alumni Mentoring Program

LAMP was established by a group of distinguished alumni of the College of Arts and Science. After earning their undergraduate degrees at NYU, they went on to take degrees in law and are now senior partners in prestigious law firms or senior lawyers at major corporations across the country. These founders comprise the LAMP Advisory Committee. In addition, other prominent attorneys participate as LAMP members.

LAMP is an exceptional opportunity for CAS pre-law students to encounter and interact with leading legal practitioners and scholars. It capitalizes on NYU's location in the heart of the legal and business capital of the world, on a campus with one of the nation’s premier law schools. Building on the College’s commitment to enrich the CAS undergraduate experience with stimulating preprofessional experiences, LAMP takes advantage of the extraordinary strengths of the College's alumni.

Some of LAMP's activities, like the annual LAMP Lecture and Moot Court, are open to the entire University community. Other activities, such as individual mentoring and summer employment programs, are available to selected prelaw students who apply for these and other LAMP experiences. Students apply through the Preprofessional Advising Center in the fall, and are chosen by the LAMP Advisory Committee on the basis of academic excellence and an autobiographical essay.

LAMP Strives to:

  • offer CAS students one-on-one mentoring with experienced, practicing attorneys who can offer advice on choosing law schools and careers;
  • create opportunities for summer employment at major law firms and corporations, providing CAS students insight into the legal profession and the business world;
  • host career day conferences for CAS students at which established attorneys share their experiences and frankly discuss options available in the legal profession;
  • invite LAMP Advisory Committee Members and legal scholars to the College to conduct informal seminars with students on contemporary topics in the law;
  • sponsor an annual LAMP Lecture, given by a distinguished public servant or practicing attorney and addressing critical contemporary issues;
  • provide annual support for an NYU Law School student to coach the CAS Mock Trial Team, which competes every year with teams from other major universities;
  • encourage interaction between CAS and NYU Law students through such programs as the Law School's trial advocacy clinic, in which CAS students may be selected to participate as witnesses or jurors.

Enhancing the undergraduate experience for CAS students who plan to pursue careers in the legal profession.
